Do you know “Tanabata”—–a romantic legend about lovers?

Hello, this is Kazu.

Today, I’d like to share the story of Tanabata, Japan’s Star Festival, celebrated on July 7. According to the legend, it is the one special day each year when two lovers, separated by the Milky Way, are finally able to meet on opposite sides of the galaxy.

Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival, is one of Japan’s most beautiful seasonal traditions. It is celebrated every year on July 7 and is based on a romantic legend about two stars, Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). According to the story, they are lovers who are separated by the Milky Way and can meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. Their reunion reminds us that patience, hope, and love can overcome even great distances.

One of the most enjoyable Tanabata traditions is writing wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku. People hang these wishes on bamboo branches, believing that their dreams and hopes will reach the heavens. Children often wish for success in school, while adults may wish for good health, happiness, or success in their work. Streets, parks, and shopping areas are decorated with beautiful streamers and ornaments, creating a festive atmosphere throughout Japan.

Although Tanabata has its roots in ancient traditions from both China and Japan, its message remains meaningful today. It encourages us to cherish our loved ones, never give up on our dreams, and appreciate the importance of hope. Whether you are visiting Japan or celebrating from another country, Tanabata is a wonderful opportunity to make a wish, look up at the summer night sky, and remember that even when people are far apart, their hearts can still be connected.

We hope your wishes come true, and we wish you a joyful and memorable Tanabata!

That’s all for this week! Be sure to check back next Thursday for my next blog. See you then!
