Tarutama Onsen in southern Aso

Sorry it has been a while since I have made any entries.

Recently I have embarked on the 88 hot spring hopping challenge in Kyushu.

While many of the hot springs in the challenge are located outside of the Aso area, I did get to visit a very beautiful hot spring in the southern area of Aso.

Tarutama Onsen is nestled just on the outskirts of the Aso mountain range with beautiful scenery and small waterfalls creating a captivating backdrop.

Upon arriving at the parking lot, the signature strong Sulphur smell of a natural hot spring hits you quite strongly as you immediately see steam popping up from everywhere.

I immediately noticed the cooking area that is available for all guests to use and is a great way to naturally steam cook any foods you have brought with you.

I recommend shopping at the supermarket before you go and to bringing things like potatoes, pumpkin, chicken, broccoli and bacon with you to make a nice lunch or dinner after you have enjoyed soaking in the hot springs.

This time I opted for renting one of the private baths as I wanted to take some pictures of the bath and the room.

There are many hot springs listed on the 88 challenge that do not have this option so it is a lot more difficult to get privacy to take photos.

The water was very different to those I have already experienced in hot spring challenge so far. It was incredibly soft and leaves your skin feeling like you have applied moisturizer or body cream.

The hot spring also produce their own organic shampoo, conditioners and body washes that they sell in their shop but also provide free to use for all hot spring guests.

room

The room and bath were extremely clean and the views were very relaxing. After a pleasant 60 minutes bathing in my very own private hot spring, it was unfortunately time to say goodbye.

I took a look around their small shop before leaving that sold cute towels and other hot spring accessories.

The water type is honestly one of the best I have experienced yet and I would highly recommend stopping here if you have access to car during your time in Aso.

Thank you for reading and I hope you get the chance to unwind in one of the beautiful hot springs Aso has to offer.

Oliver
