Mount Aso Level 3 Alert: All Hiking Trails Closed

At 3:45 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, the Fukuoka Regional Headquarters of the Japan Meteorological Agency raised Mount Aso’s Volcanic Alert Level from Level 2 to Level 3: Do Not Approach the Volcano.

The amplitude of volcanic tremors has continued to increase, indicating a further rise in volcanic activity. An eruption capable of affecting areas within approximately 2 km of Nakadake First Crater may occur.

Hiking Restrictions

Under the current Level 3 restrictions, hiking is prohibited on all four mountains around Kusasenrigahama:

  • Mt. Nakadake
  • Mt. Takadake
  • Mt. Kishimadake
  • Mt. Eboshidake

Nakadake First Crater, Sunasenrigahama, Mt. Sarayama and all roads and trails within the restricted area are also closed. Please do not pass any barriers or closure signs.

Kusasenri Remains Accessible

Kusasenri remains accessible for sightseeing. However, volcanic ash and small volcanic rocks may be carried downwind, and volcanic gases may affect the area.
