Eboshidake Hike in Aso | Volcano Views & Azaleas

One of the best shorter hiking routes in Aso is Mount Eboshidake, a small grassland mountain located inside Kusasenri. During May, the entire trail becomes covered in blooming Miyama Kirishima azaleas, creating one of the most beautiful spring hikes in Aso.

A Short and Easy Volcano View Hike in Aso

The Eboshidake hike is relatively beginner-friendly and takes around 2 hours round trip. The trail is mostly dirt paths with a few wooden stair sections, making it accessible for casual hikers looking for panoramic volcano views without a full-day trek.

What makes this hike special is the scenery along the entire trail.
In late spring, the mountain becomes covered in vibrant pink flowers. In some sections, the trail feels completely surrounded by blooming Miyama Kirishima bushes.

Recommended Hiking Route

The most common route starts from Kusasenri.

We usually recommend:

  • Take the right-side trail up when facing the mountain
  • Descend using the opposite-side trail

This route creates a small loop trail and is also safer for descending, as the right-side trail has some slippery and eroded sections.

However, not everyone needs to hike to the summit.
If you mainly want volcano views, take the left-side trail from Kusasenri. After around 20 minutes, you’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking the crater area.

Volcano Views from the Summit

From the summit, you can overlook the Mount Aso Nakadake Crater and the wide grasslands of Kusasenri below.

One of the highlights is the descent trail.
While walking down the mountain, you can continuously see volcanic smoke rising from the crater area. Meanwhile, the grasslands and seasonal flowers create a landscape unique to Aso.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for this hike is usually from mid to late May. During this period, the Miyama Kirishima azaleas are in full bloom across the mountain slopes.
In addition, spring brings mild temperatures and clear views before the June rainy season begins.
