Did you know the role of lanterns in Japan?

Hi, I’m Kazu!!

Today, I’d like to briefly introduce the topic of lanterns.

Aso Shrine, one of the three greatest rōmon (tower gates) in Japan.

Shinto lanterns, known as tōrō, chōchin are significant symbols in Japanese culture and spirituality. These lanterns are not merely decorative objects; they embody a deep connection to the Shinto faith, representing a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. Traditionally, they are placed at the entrances of shrines, gardens, and sacred spaces, guiding both the living and the spirits of the departed.

The use of lanterns in Shinto dates back centuries, evolving from simple sources of light to intricate artistic expressions. Initially, they were crafted to illuminate pathways and sacred sites, but over time, they became integral to rituals, ceremonies, and festivals, enriching the spiritual landscape of Japan.

Even the shop entrances on Aso Shrine’s approach are decorated with lanterns(chōchin) .

Before I finish, there is one last thing ….

From late April to early May, Japan has a long holiday period called Golden Week. Many Japanese tourists visit Aso during this time, and hotels and other tourist facilities tend to raise their prices, so please avoid coming during that period. However, once June begins, the rainy season unfortunately starts. Therefore, if possible, please visit during the short period after Golden Week and before the rainy season begins.
