10 Years On: Kumamoto’s Recovery and the One Piece Statue Journey

This month marks exactly 10 years since the Kumamoto Earthquake.

Although Kumamoto suffered significant damage, reconstruction has progressed steadily, and today many visitors are once again coming to explore the region.

One Piece, the globally popular manga created by Kumamoto-born artist Eiichiro Oda, has played a special role in this recovery.

The “One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project,” which encourages visitors to travel around the prefecture and visit character statues, has been a great success. Today, fans travel from all over Japan—and even from the other side of the world—to see these statues.

While the commemorative statue-visit cards are unfortunately no longer available, the two types of limited-edition figures sold at each location remain very popular.

In addition, a new trading card collection was released in Feb. The first batch sold out in less than 15 minutes due to limited availability. However, we are excited to announce that the cards will be restocked starting tomorrow, April 22, at locations across the prefecture.

At Michi-no-Eki Aso, they will be available from opening time tomorrow.
With a larger quantity expected this time, we hope they will remain available for a while.

Each set includes 10 cards featuring the characters represented by the statues across Kumamoto. These sets can be purchased not only at Michi-no-Eki Aso, but also at other locations where the figures are sold.

To all One Piece fans around the world—please come and visit Kumamoto and Aso.

Along with the statue tour, we hope you enjoy the magnificent nature of Aso and its wonderful local cuisine.
