Izakaya are a type of Japanese pub. They serve a wide range of food and drinks at relatively low prices.
Traditionally, Izakaya had red lanterns at their front entrances. Because of this, the Japanese word “akachochin,” which literally means red lantern, is another word used to describe Izakaya.
Common Izakaya foods include edamame, or boiled green soybeans; yakitori, or grilled chicken; sashimi or sliced raw fish; and sushi, all of which go well with beer and Japanese alcoholic beverages like sake. Portions are usually small and meant to be shared, so you can sample many different items with your friends.

Some Izakaya have outdoor seating and others offer stand-up drinking only.
You can often see many “salarymen”, Japanese businessmen, drinking with their coworkers at Izakaya after work to relieve their stresses. You can observe this phenomenon every weekday evening from Monday to Friday.

During the day, you can enjoy the essence of Aso’s nature — from its volcanoes to the breathtaking panoramic views at Daikanbō. After refreshing both body and mind in a natural hot spring, how about ending the night by slipping into bed with a pleasant buzz from an Aso izakaya?
