Aso Visitor Center at Aso Volcano Museum

Hi from Michi no Eki Aso.

I was going to see Noyaki (burning grassland) at Mt.Aso (Kusasenri) last week but unfortunately, the day Noyaki was planned ( 6th March), there was a heavy fog at Mt. Aso as you can see on the picture below and it was cancelled.

So my plan was changed and I went to Aso Volcano Museum instead!

While going up to Mt.Aso by car, I felt so scared by the fog.

Please drive carefully when it is foggy.

Luckily I saw these lovely horses ♡ You can see them on the roads to Mt.Aso.

So kawaii ( cute in Japanese )

I arrived at Aso Volcano Museum for the first time! ( I have never been there before even thought I am living in Aso for over 20 years lol )

So It was good time for me to learn about Aso once again!

This is Aso Volcano Museum.

You can learn about

  • How was Mt.Aso (caldera)created
  • Volcanic eruption
  • Kumamoto earthquake
  • Water and hot springs in Aso
  • Insects and animals living in Aso

Stuff like these kinds of things and moreover. Also there are a lot of exhibitions you can see.

Inside the museum there is Mt.Aso Visitor Center on the first floor.

Only the first floor is admission free and you can get to know about Aso too. I am going to share about Mt.Aso Visitor Center with you today.

First of all, I was curious about trekking route maps.

All three routes I am going to introduce are available to trek from the parking at Aso Volcano Museum.

For beginner

1.To Mt.Kishimadake (杵島岳) 1.4km from Aso Volcano museum.

You can enjoy watching glassland and the area where the crater remains. When you arrive at the top of Kishimadake, you can see Komezuka (米塚).

2.To Mt.Eboshidake (烏帽子岳)1.9km from Aso Volcano museum.

You can trek around Kusasenri.

If you are lucky, you can see some horses while trekking to Eboshidake.

For trekking enthusiasts or someone who wants to challenge high level trekking.

You can go to Mt.Nakadake (中岳) and Takadake (高岳) the highest mountain in Aso. Total 5km trekking from Aso Volcano Museum.

You can see activity of Nakadake crater while trekking. It is too difficult for me (beginner) to trek to Mt.Nakadake and Takadake.

We are waiting for your challenge!

And please visit Mt.Aso Visitor center to get to know Aso even more!
