Every autumn, fields of tiny white soba (buckwheat) flowers bloom across the highlands, covering the landscape like a soft white carpet. Surrounded by green hills and distant mountains, the Namino soba fields offer a completely different side of Aso from its famous volcanic scenery and vast grasslands.
Soba and the Namino Highlands
Located in the eastern part of Aso City, Namino is a highland area known for its peaceful rural scenery and soba cultivation.
Because Aso is located at a relatively high elevation, the climate is cooler than many lower-lying parts of Kumamoto. Soba has long been cultivated in the region and has become an important part of the local food culture.
Namino is now one of Aso’s best-known soba-producing areas, and during the flowering season, the fields themselves become a beautiful seasonal attraction.
A White Flower Field in September
Soba flowers are small individually, but when millions of them bloom together, they create an impressive sea of white.
The flowering season is usually around September, with the scenery at its best around mid-September. The Namino fields can contain as many as seven million tiny white flowers, transforming the countryside for a short period each year.
On a sunny day, the contrast between the white flowers, blue sky and surrounding green mountains makes this an especially beautiful place for photography.
But the scenery has its own charm on cloudy or rainy days too. Raindrops resting on the flowers and mist drifting across the surrounding hills can give the landscape a quiet and almost mysterious atmosphere.
Walk Through the Countryside
From the entrance area, follow the road uphill for around five minutes.
Along the way, you will pass several smaller soba fields before reaching the larger flower field at the top of the gentle hill.
Once you arrive, the landscape opens up in front of you, with white flowers stretching across the fields, green trees in the distance and mountains forming the backdrop.
It is a simple countryside walk, but one that perfectly captures the peaceful atmosphere of rural Aso.
How to Get to the Namino Soba Flower Fields
The flower fields are relatively easy to reach by both car and train.
By train:
Namino Station is the closest railway station. From the station, the soba flower fields are approximately a 10-minute walk away.
If travelling from the Aso area, you can take the JR Hohi Main Line toward Bungo-Taketa and get off at Namino Station.
By car:
From central Aso City, drive east along National Route 57 toward Namino. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes to the parking area near the flower fields.
As train services in the Namino area are limited, we recommend checking the latest timetable before travelling by public transport.
Don’t Forget to Try Local Soba
After enjoying the flowers, why not complete your visit with a bowl of locally made soba noodles?
Namino is well known for its buckwheat production, and several restaurants in the area serve soba made using locally grown buckwheat.
