The rice fields of Aso are turning golden, and the ripened stalks are swaying in the autumn breeze.
As the harvest season arrives, we look forward to the Tanomi Festival at Aso Shrine on September 25.
With a history of around 2,300 years, Aso Shrine has long been at the heart of Aso’s agricultural traditions.
The agricultural rituals held at Aso Shrine, as well as at Kokuzo Shrine and Shimo Shrine, have been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
One of the distinctive features of these rituals is that many of their ancient forms have been carefully passed down through generations, forming a connected cycle throughout the four seasons.
Tatsukuri-sai / Hifuri Shinji ritual
The cycle begins in March with the Tatsukuri Festival (田作祭), including the famous Fire-Twirling Ritual, when prayers are offered for a good harvest. At the end of July, the Onda Festival (御田祭) is held, when the deities are believed to observe the growth of the rice. Then, in September, the Tanomi Festival (田実祭) gives thanks for the year’s harvest.

There are also rituals held to pray for protection from other agricultural hazards, such as strong winds and frost.
Tanomi Festival — Giving Thanks for the Harvest
The Tanomi Festival is held every year on September 25 at Aso Shrine.
It is a time to report to the deities that the year’s farming has been successfully completed and to give thanks for the autumn harvest.
The year’s first harvested rice is offered before the deities as an expression of gratitude. The ceremony is followed by traditional rituals including a ceremonial sumo performance, and yabusame, horseback archery.
