When people think of Aso, its vast grasslands, volcano, and Kusasenri may be the first things that come to mind. However, Aso’s natural scenery is far more diverse than many visitors realize.
This time, we are introducing Kikuchi Gorge, located on the northwestern side of Aso’s caldera rim and also part of Aso-Kuju National Park. Leaving the open grasslands behind and entering a gorge surrounded by forest and clear streams reveals a completely different side of Aso.
Take a Scenic Drive Along the Milk Road from Aso
If you are driving from Aso City to Kikuchi Gorge, follow the well-known Milk Road toward Aso’s outer rim before continuing in the direction of Kikuchi.
Along the way, you can enjoy views of Aso’s grasslands and caldera rim. The gradual change from open countryside to dense forest makes the journey itself a relaxing and scenic drive.
If Daikanbo, Aso City, or Kusasenri are already part of your itinerary, Kikuchi Gorge is also well worth adding to your trip for another look at Aso’s natural beauty.
A Natural Escape from the Summer Heat
Kikuchi Gorge lies at an elevation of approximately 500 to 800 meters and is located near the headwaters of the Kikuchi River. Clear water flows through the thick natural forest, passing waterfalls, pools, and moss-covered rocks.
In summer, the air becomes noticeably cooler as soon as you enter the gorge.
Walking through the forest with the sound of flowing water all around you makes Kikuchi Gorge an ideal place to escape Kumamoto’s summer heat. It has also been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Forest Bathing Spots.
Beautiful Scenery in Every Season
Kikuchi Gorge is not only worth visiting in summer.
Fresh greenery appears in spring, clear streams sparkle in summer, and the forest turns shades of red and yellow in autumn. In winter, the gorge is occasionally transformed by beautiful rime ice. Each season offers a completely different landscape.
If you would like to venture beyond Aso’s main sightseeing routes, continue north along the Milk Road and enjoy a short trip to Kikuchi Gorge.
From Aso’s sweeping grasslands to the forests and clear waters of Kikuchi Gorge, you can experience two very different sides of Aso-Kuju National Park in a single journey.
