Hiking Aso with Children: A Safe Trail with Stunning Views

👟Trekking to Aso Nakadake Crater/Naraodake from Sensuikyo Trailhead👟

If you have a car and are looking for a family-friendly trekking route to the Aso Nakadake Crater, starting from the Sensuikyo trailhead is a great option.

Although the trail from Sensuikyo requires a steady climb in elevation, the path is simple and safe—even for children. I personally avoid narrow ridgelines when hiking with kids (and I imagine most people do). The route I’m introducing has no narrow or dangerous sections, so adults don’t have to stay tense the whole time. You can relax and enjoy the beautiful views along the way!

The average hiking time from Sensuikyo to the Nakadake Crater East Observation Point is about 90 minutes. (3 hrs for the round trip) Even with our 6-year-old and many snack breaks, it still took us only around that much time. While there are no flat stretches on the trail, the incline is consistent but not overly steep—perfect for a manageable yet rewarding hike.

Please note: the fence near the crater was damaged during the 2021 eruption, so extra caution is needed when you reach that area.

If you’re hiking with small children, I don’t recommend continuing past the observation point toward the Nakadake and Takadake summits, as the trail follows a narrow ridgeline that can be risky. While the view is beautiful, it’s more suitable for experienced hikers or those without young kids.

For a lunch break, I highly recommend heading to Naraodake, which is just a 15-minute walk from the crater viewpoint.

After returning from the crater, cross the large open area that used to be the cable car station, and look for a double circle marked on the rocks—that’s the trail to Naraodake.

In just a few minutes, you’ll reach the top, where there are plenty of flat, uncrowded spots with amazing views—perfect for a peaceful break.

With the rainy season approaching, the greenery along the trail becomes especially vibrant and shiny on sunny days.
This route offers a beautiful contrast: the lush green foothills gradually give way to the rugged, earthy colors of the volcanic landscape near the crater.

*This route is open only when the volcanic alert level is at Level 1.
*Be sure to check the wind direction—when the wind blows from the west, volcanic gases can be too strong for hiking.

Enjoy your nature walk in Aso!
