Mount Aso Level 3 Alert: Latest Hiking Restrictions

At 3:45 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, the Fukuoka Regional Headquarters of the Japan Meteorological Agency raised Mount Aso’s Volcanic Alert Level from Level 2 to Level 3: Do Not Approach the Volcano.

At the time of the announcement, an increase in the amplitude of volcanic tremors indicated heightened volcanic activity. An eruption affecting areas within approximately 2 km of Nakadake First Crater was considered possible.

Hiking Restrictions

Under the current Level 3 restrictions, hiking is prohibited on Mt. Nakadake and Mt. Takadake.

Some trails on Mt. Kishima and Mt. Eboshi are currently restricted. Hiking is not recommended. Please check the latest trail restrictions before setting out.

Nakadake First Crater, Sunasenrigahama, Mt. Sarayama and all roads and trails within the restricted area are also closed. Please do not pass any barriers or closure signs.

Kusasenri Remains Accessible

Kusasenri remains accessible for sightseeing. However, volcanic ash and small volcanic rocks may be carried downwind, and volcanic gases may affect the area.

Important Safety Information

  • Do not enter Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Takadake, or any restricted hiking trails.
  • Remain within designated open sightseeing areas at Kusasenrigahama.
  • Follow all barriers, closure signs, and staff instructions.
  • Leave the area immediately if volcanic ash begins to fall, volcanic gas levels rise, or you feel unwell.
