Winter is Coming — Preparing for Snow in Mount Aso

Hello everyone — Kana here from Michi-no-Eki Aso (Aso Roadside Station)!

Somehow, it’s already December. Not long ago we were still in T-shirts, and now the new year is just around the corner.

Last year, the first snow on Mount Aso arrived on November 28, nine days later than usual.
This year, snow came even later — but on December 4th, we finally saw the first snow on the top of Takadake, marking the true start of Aso’s winter season.

🏔️ Why Aso Gets Snow

Aso’s landscape, with its wide caldera and surrounding mountains, means you’ll encounter steep slopes and winding mountain roads.

  • Michi-no-Eki Aso sits at around 500 m above sea level

  • Kusasenri, a popular viewpoint, is about 1,150 m

  • The Milk Road runs around 700–930 m

Because of these elevations, winter conditions such as snow and icy roads appear frequently.


🛞 Before You Head Out: Winter Travel Tips

1. Check road conditions & live cameras
We strongly recommend checking the live road cameras provided by local authorities, especially in the early morning after snow or rain. These show major roads and sightseeing spots around Aso.

2. Use snow tires
If you’re renting a car, request snow tires (or ensure you have chains). Mountain roads in Aso can become very slippery in winter.

3. Major roads are usually maintained first
National Route 57 — where Michi-no-Eki Aso is located — is typically cleared and treated quickly, so reaching our facility is rarely difficult.

4. Be flexible
Winter weather in Aso can change quickly. Always check the forecast, road status, and safety alerts before going into higher elevations like Kusasenri or the crater area.
