Experience the Slow Flow of Time Amidst Aso’s Nature – What is “Aso Yutatto Village”?

What is “Aso Yutatto Village”?

Nestled at the foot of Aso’s northern outer rim, surrounded by the grand natural beauty of Kumamoto’s Aso region, stands a traditional Japanese farmhouse over 100 years old.
“Aso Yutatto Village” is an accommodation and exchange facility where guests can experience the four seasons and rural life of Aso, with this historic home as its hub.
Nearby, you’ll find a blueberry farm, chestnut grove, shiitake mushroom logs, and a biotope. From the garden, you can gaze out at the Aso Five Peaks. As night falls, a sky full of stars spreads overhead.
In this nostalgic, peaceful space that feels like stepping into the heart of the Aso countryside, time flows gently around you.

The Facility
Operated by the Aso Greenstock Foundation, a key organization connecting urban residents, companies, governments, and rural communities to protect the nature of Aso.
Various plans are available, from farmhouse stays and BBQs to auto camping.

How you use the village is entirely up to you:

Whether it’s a private group stay, a quiet solo retreat, a family nature experience, or a workation, the options are flexible.
In this feature, we’ll introduce 7 recommended ways to spend your time at Yutatto Village.

How would you spend your “free time” in the great outdoors?

7 Things You Can Do at Yutatto Village

  1. Savor Aso Akaushi with an Authentic BBQ in the Garden

Grill up premium Aso Akaushi beef in the spacious garden with views of the Aso Five Peaks — a luxurious BBQ experience unique to Aso Yutatto Village!
Raised on Aso’s vast grasslands, this lean, red-meat-rich beef is packed with flavor.
The “Akaushi BBQ Set” (including BBQ grill rental) provides all necessary ingredients and tools, making it easy to enjoy even without bringing anything.
You’re also welcome to bring your own ingredients and rent just the grill.

[BBQ Set Prices (tax included)]

  • Per person: ¥3,300 (220g Akaushi beef, vegetables, rice, sauce, salt & pepper, charcoal, plates, chopsticks)
  • Extra beef: 220g for ¥2,000 (reservation only)
  • Grill rental: ¥3,300 (includes 6kg charcoal, tongs, grill net)
BBQ-only use is also possible (2 hours / minimum 4 people)

  1. A Casual Camping Life Beneath the Chestnut Trees

Just a 5-minute walk from the farmhouse, the auto campsite is located within a chestnut grove.
In spring and summer, the fresh greenery is breathtaking.
Set up a tent, light a fire, and gaze up at the starry sky — a tranquil experience that melts away stress.
The campsite can also be used independently of accommodation.

[Campsite Fees (tax included)]

  • Tent: ¥1,100
  • Facility usage: Adults ¥500 / Elementary students ¥300 / Free for preschoolers

  1. Uchinomaki Onsen ⇒ Beer on the Engawa

Just a 10-minute drive from the village, Uchinomaki Onsen is a nostalgic hot spring town with public and private baths.
After a relaxing soak, head back to the farmhouse and enjoy a cold beer on the engawa (veranda).
Surrounded by insect sounds and a cool breeze, it’s the perfect unplugged evening — no phone or TV needed.

  1. Simply “Do Nothing” Under the Starry Sky

With no city lights nearby, the stars here are astonishing.
Lie back and gaze into the night sky, letting the sounds of nature and the chill in the air refresh you.
This is the luxury of doing absolutely nothing.

  1. Slow Mornings in a 100-Year-Old Farmhouse

Step out onto the engawa in the early morning and breathe in the crisp air — a refreshing Aso morning.
Even in summer, mornings and evenings are pleasantly cool.
Sip coffee while admiring the Aso mountain ridgeline.

The kitchen is spacious and newly renovated, perfect for cooking a simple yet special breakfast like miso soup and tamagoyaki.

Afterward, stretch out in the tatami room and read or nap in the sunlight.
Time passes gently — just listening to the wind and watching the clouds can be deeply fulfilling.

  1. Remote Work Surrounded by Nature — with Wi-Fi!

In the free space, Wi-Fi is available and the work environment is comfortable.
The white plaster walls can be used for projections, making the space suitable for movie nights or online meetings.
Look up from your screen to see lush forest views, and step outside for a breath of fresh air whenever needed.
A perfect blend of work and healing.

[Workation Fees]

  • ¥550 per hour (per person)
  • Available: Fri–Mon (9:00–16:00)
  • Closed from November to April; available only when no overnight guests

  1. Seasonal Harvesting — Blueberries, Chestnuts, Shiitake

One of the best parts of Yutatto Village is the chance to harvest seasonal mountain produce:
Blueberries in summer, chestnuts in autumn, and shiitake mushrooms in spring and fall.
Great for kids as a learning activity and for adults as a healing moment.
Let your senses delight in nature’s gifts.
