Aso Scenic Restaurant Guide|Enjoy Akaushi Beef with a Panoramic View at North Mountain Restaurant & Nishiyunouraenchi Observatory

Hi, I’m Shenny, an intern at Michi-no-Eki Aso (Aso Eco Museum).

When visiting Aso in Kumamoto, don’t just admire the volcanic terrain and sweeping grasslands—why not sit back and enjoy a delicious Akaushi beef meal while gazing out over the majestic Aso Five Peaks?

In this post, I’ll introduce one of the area’s best scenic restaurants—North Mountain Restaurant, and the nearby Nishiyunouraenchi Observatory, a must-visit combo for those who want to combine local flavor, natural beauty, and a bit of surprise.

🚗 Perfect Route Suggestion: Daikanbo → North Mountain Restaurant

Planning to visit Daikanbo, one of Aso’s most iconic scenic spots?

Make sure to stop by North Mountain Restaurant, located just a 10-minute drive away!

After enjoying a 360° panoramic view of the outer rim mountains, head downhill and treat yourself to a bowl of Akaushi beef rice.

Great food + great view = perfect Aso experience.

🍽 North Mountain Restaurant – A Scenic Restaurant Loved by Locals & Travelers

North Mountain Restaurant is a well-known local eatery in the Aso highlands that specializes in Kumamoto’s premium Akaushi beef. From the indoor seats to the open terrace, diners are treated to a clear view of the Aso Five Peaks.

Popular with road trippers and motorcycle riders, this restaurant offers both hearty meals and stunning scenery in one stop.

Signature Dish: “Baiku-don” (倍喰丼)

This hearty dish features thick slices of juicy Akaushi beef steak laid over freshly steamed rice and drizzled with a flavorful garlic-soy sauce.

Each set comes with salad, miso soup, and tofu sides. You can choose from small, medium, or large portions, depending on your appetite.

🌄 After Your Meal: Take a Walk to Nishiyunouraenchi Observatory

Just steps from the restaurant lies the Nishiyunouraenchi Observatory, one of the best places to admire the iconic Aso Five Peaks. From this angle, the peaks line up to form the shape of a reclining Buddha, a natural formation known locally as the “Nehanzo (涅槃像).”

There’s also a heart-shaped design mowed into the grass, making it a fun photo spot for couples and families alike.
