Discovering local language and culture through a hands-on Japanese learning event in Aso, Kumamoto.
Hi, I’m Shenny!
Today, I joined a fun and eye-opening event in Aso, Kumamoto: Learning the Aso dialect through Japanese. It wasn’t just a language class—it was a chance to connect with locals and dive into regional culture. Even as a beginner, I felt supported by the kind and patient volunteers who guided us through every step.
Starting Simple: Self-Introductions in Japanese
We began by introducing ourselves in Japanese—where we’re from and how long we’ve been in Aso. It was my first time speaking with local residents outside of work, and it gave me confidence to use Japanese in daily life.
Then came a game: guessing each other’s favorite food. I wrote “sweet potato leaves,” a common veggie in Taiwan but unfamiliar in Japan, so no one could guess it! It became a funny moment that also showed the cultural gap in food.
Local Vocabulary: Japanese + Aso Dialect
Next, we learned Japanese names for fruits and vegetables, then their Aso dialect versions. Items like corn, sweet potato, and local highland greens had totally different names depending on the region. We also discovered some agricultural specialties unique to Aso.
Group Work & Final Sharing
In small groups, we discussed Japanese phrases or dialect words we often hear but don’t understand in Aso. After the discussion, each group went on stage to share what they had learned. It was great to hear everyone’s discoveries—from confusing slang to useful everyday expressions.
Final Thoughts: More Than Just Language
Even with limited vocabulary, this event showed me that language is a tool for connection—not a barrier. Thanks to the friendly volunteers and teachers, I felt welcomed and encouraged. I’ll keep learning, one word at a time, and turn each small challenge into a chance to grow in Aso.
