A traditional wooden tofu shop loved by locals, serving fresh tofu, soy milk ice cream, and popular soy-based desserts in Aso, Kumamoto.
Hi, I’m Shenny!
Today I’m excited to introduce one of Aso’s hidden local food gems: Kimura Tofu Store (木村とうふ店) — a small, family-run tofu shop that’s been around for generations. Even Ando-san from my internship at Michi-no-Eki recommended it, calling it “a taste you’ll never forget.”

If you’re driving through Aso, don’t miss Kimura Tofu, a beloved century-old local shop. They offer handmade tofu, soy milk, and soy-based desserts, all made with Aso’s natural spring water and select soybeans—no additives. The cozy wooden storefront is mainly for takeout, with a few parking spots and even a spring water hand-washing station at the entrance. A true hidden gem for tofu lovers.

🏡 About the Shop
Kimura Tofu Store is tucked inside a humble Japanese-style wooden house. The storefront is simple and unassuming, with a warm and homey interior. Run by a friendly local family, it’s mainly a takeout shop, and stepping inside feels like visiting your neighbor’s kitchen.

🍽 What to Try?
■ Unique Tofu Flavors
Aside from their regular tofu, they offer special varieties like green pea tofu, yuzu tofu, and fresh yuba (tofu skin).
■ Pure Soy Milk
I took home a bottle of unsweetened soy milk — and was surprised by how naturally sweet and smooth it tasted. No bitterness, no grainy texture — just the clean flavor of high-quality soybeans.
■ Soy-Based Cakes
Their soy milk desserts are also a hit online.
- Soy Milk Cheesecake – Light yet creamy with a delicate soy aroma, perfect even if you’re not a dessert person.
- Rare Soy Milk Cheesecake – A no-bake, chilled version with a silky smooth texture, combining rich dairy and subtle soy flavors. Highly recommended!

🍦 Soy Milk Ice Cream (¥300)
One of my top recommendations!
The texture is smooth, and the flavor is rich in soy without being too sweet. It’s clean, light, and refreshing—very different from overly sweet commercial versions. On a hot summer day, it was the perfect treat. Even someone like me who rarely finishes a full cone devoured this one!
