Donburimono can be translated as “rice bowl dish”. It consists of a bowl of rice topped with a variety of foods. Common toppings include assortments of fresh sliced seafood, seasoned beef, and tempura (deep-fried seafood and vegetables). In Japanese cuisine, there are a number of dishes in which something is served on top of a bowl rice. Donburimono is popular because it can quickly and easily be especially at lunch time.

Out of the many donburimono dishes, Gyudon is especially famous. Gyudon is a rice bowl topped with thinly sliced beef and onions cooked in a salty-sweet sauce.

Here in Aso Roadside Station, the Akaushi beef bowl is especially well-regarded and highly popular among both domestic and international visitors. Sometimes, it even sells out by early afternoon.

So everyone, please feel free to purchase these rice bowls—there’s a dining area inside the facility, and of course, a microwave is available, so you can heat them up and enjoy the Akaushi beef, raised free-range on the grasslands of Aso.
