It has been getting warmer here lately, and spring is just around the corner — a great season to get out and explore around Aso.

Since October 2025, a new bus route — locally known as the Asochiho Bus — has been operating between Aso and Takachiho, running three times a day. Even if you are not traveling all the way to Takachiho, this route makes it easy to explore both the northern and southern sides of the Aso caldera, including Minami-Aso and the Takamori area.
The timetable is shown below.

If the bus is not fully booked, you can also board without a reservation and pay directly on the bus (cash or contactless card accepted).
Here are a few examples of places you can visit along the route:
Shirakawa Spring

The source of the Shirakawa River, where about 60 tons of clear spring water flow every minute.
Takamori Yusui Tunnel

A tunnel originally excavated for a planned railway project. Construction was eventually abandoned after an unexpectedly large amount of spring water was discovered, and today the space has been transformed into a unique water park.
Takamori Station

Home to a statue of Franky, one of the bronze statues installed across Kumamoto as part of the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project, inspired by the popular Japanese manga and anime ONE PIECE.
