Minamiaso: Nature and Earthquake Memories

Hello everyone, I’m Jessica, an intern at Michinoeki.

In 2016, the Kumamoto Earthquake caused many buildings and major roads to collapse. Even today, Minamiaso still preserves several disaster sites as reminders of that time. Let’s take a look at how this village has changed over the nine years since the earthquake.

Sugarukuzure Memorial Observatory

From this viewpoint, you can see the earthquake memorial monument and historical records showing the area before and after the disaster. Standing in front of the collapsed bridge is a powerful reminder of how destructive the earthquake truly was.

Aso Bridge

On the left side, you can still see the ruins of the old Aso Bridge, which collapsed during the earthquake and remains stuck in the valley. On the right, the newly built Aso Bridge now stands as an important connection to Minamiaso.

Aso Canyon Terrace

The famous canyon swing in Minamiaso is becoming more and more popular. From the swing, you can enjoy breathtaking aerial views of Aso. I especially recommend visiting in the late afternoon to capture the stunning sunset.

數鹿流瀑布

This waterfall is located just off the national highway and is truly impressive. You can easily stop your car, get out, and snap some photos. For those who want a closer view, there’s a small path that leads down to the base of the waterfall.
